FAQs
What is Cameo™ horse fencing?
Cameo™ horse fencing is a white monofilament line made from a durable, nylon-based material. It provides excellent visibility, helping horses see and respect the fence — reducing the risk of injury. Unlike traditional fencing, Cameo™ contains no dangerous wire, making it a safer choice for your animals. Designed to be safe, affordable, and easy to install, Cameo™ is the ideal solution for DIY horse owners seeking reliable and low-risk fencing.
Why buy Cameo™ horse fencing?
Cameo™ horse fencing is safe for your horses. It has strength -1200 lbs breaking per line – and flexibility. The line will flex up to 20% before breaking. The flexibility eliminates the “cheese-cutter effect” your horse experiences from high-tensile fencing. Cameo™ horse fencing is extremely cost-effective. Especially when you have minimized the vet bills, the care and attention, or anguish, of dealing with a horse injury from other fencing styles. Due to the cost of freight, we do not sell fence posts. These are items you should source locally to get the best price (e.g., Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware, etc.). We do sell all the hardware and supplies needed for installation on any post.
Can I order a Sample?
Yes, we'll ship out a sample in 1-2 business days! Please email us at info@cameofencing.com with your name and shippipng address OR give us a call at 800-822-5426.
I’ve never installed a fence before — Can I install Cameo™?
Yes! Cameo™ is designed with DIYers in mind, and many first-time fence installers have great success with it.
The most challenging part of any fencing project is setting the posts, and if you can do that, you’re already most of the way there. Cameo™ is simple to handle, easy to tension, and doesn’t require special tools or advanced skills. If you can set a post, you can install Cameo™ like a pro.
Why buy Cameo™ horse fencing from Cameo™ Fence, LLC?
At Cameo™, we have over 30 years of experience with monofilament horse fencing. We take pride in providing friendly, helpful, and courteous service. If you have questions, we’re here to help, email or call! Send us a diagram of your fence layout, and we will determine all the necessary supplies for your installation. This is fencing made easy and worry-free.
Is Cameo™ fencing injury-proof?
While Cameo™ fencing is designed to reduce the risk of injury, no fencing system can guarantee a completely injury-free environment. The safest results come from proper installation, regular maintenance, and keeping horses conditioned to respect the fence, which is why we recommend incorporating electric lines.
What about shipping?
Cameo™ horse fencing comes in rolls of 1000, 2000, or 3000 ft. A 2000 ft. roll of Cameo™ weighs approx. 25 lbs. Easy for you to manage and easily shipped by UPS. Orders normally ship within 1-3 business days.
You will receive an email with tracking information when it ships. The courier is UPS Ground. If different or expedited shipping is required, please call 1-800-822-5426 or send an email to info@cameofencing.com.
What posts do I use with Cameo™ horse fencing?
Cameo™ horse fencing works with your choice of line post - wood, t-posts, composite or vinyl posts. Your choice depends on the look you want, your budget, ground conditions, and the labor required for installation. Due to the cost of freight, we do not sell fence posts. Posts should be sourced locally to obtain the best prices (e.g., Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware, etc.). We do sell all the hardware and supplies needed for installation on any post.
Do I have to run electric in combination with Cameo™ horse fencing?
Yes — we strongly recommend running at least two lines of electric Cameo™ to help keep your animals off the fence to reduce injuries. No fence is completely injury-proof. The best way to minimize injury risk is to prevent contact with the fence altogether. Electric lines condition horses to respect the fence and stay back from it — which helps keep them safe. Post spacing should remain at a maximum of 12 ft. on center for optimal safety and performance.
Do I need to hire an electrician to install the electric fence charger?
No — hiring an electrician is not necessary.
Installing a fence charger is a straightforward process, and each unit comes with clear, step-by-step instructions. Most customers are able to set it up on their own without any issues. Just follow the provided guidelines and safety recommendations, and your electric system will be up and running in no time.
If you ever have questions, call our customer support team at 800-822-5426 — we’re happy to help!
How many lines of Cameo™ should I run?
We recommend a total of 6 lines:
4 lines of Cameo™ and 2 lines of Cameo Pulse™ (electric).
This combination offers maximum safety by creating a strong visual and physical barrier, while the electric lines help train animals to stay off the fence, reducing the risk of injury. It also helps extend the lifespan of your fence system by minimizing contact and wear.
What height should I set my top line?
The top line should be set at 48 inches above ground level.
From there, space each additional line 8 inches apart working downward. This spacing provides a strong visual barrier and effective containment while maintaining safety for your horses.
How far should I space my posts when installing Cameo Fence?
Posts should be spaced 12 feet on center.
We do not recommend exceeding 12 feet, as this spacing helps maintain a strong visual barrier for your horses and keeps the fence lines more rigid and secure. Proper spacing is key to ensuring both the safety and performance of your Cameo Fence system.
What size posts should I use for Cameo™ fencing?
For optimal strength and longevity:
- Use 4" or 5" diameter posts for line posts
- Use 6" diameter posts for corner, gate, and end posts
Larger posts at corners and gates provide the extra stability needed to support tension and frequent pressure, while 4" or 5" posts are sufficient for maintaining line integrity along the fence.
Do I need to concrete my line posts?
No, concrete is not necessary for line posts.
Cameo™ fencing is designed for easy installation, and line posts can be set directly into the ground without concrete. Just make sure they are spaced 12 feet on center and set to an appropriate depth for your soil conditions. Only corner, gate, and end posts should be concreted for maximum strength.
Which side of the post does Cameo™ go on?
Cameo™ should be installed on the inside (pasture side) of your line posts to help keep animals from pushing against the fence. When turning corners, run Cameo™ to the backside of the corner posts to maintain tension and proper alignment.
How deep should I set my posts?
Posts should be set at least 3 feet deep, but go deeper if possible for added strength and stability. We recommend using 8-foot posts, keeping 52 to 54 inches above ground to maintain the ideal fence height. The deeper the post, the more secure your fence will be, especially in soft or sandy soil. Proper depth helps prevent movement over time and ensures long-term performance.
What type of bracing should I use when installing Cameo™ fence?
No bracing is required when installing Cameo™ fencing. The system is designed to be simple and clean, without bulky cross-bracing or H-braces that can interfere with line placement or aesthetics. For best results, use properly set 6" diameter corner, gate, and end posts installed with concrete (typically 4 bags per post) to ensure stability and long-term performance.
How do I tighten Cameo™ fencing?
Cameo™ does not require any special tensioners, winches, or come-alongs. It’s designed to be tensioned by hand to about 3% stretch.
Here’s how to do it:
- Install the line so there are no visible droops or sags between the posts.
- Measure your run length.
- Calculate 3% of that distance.
- Example: For a 100 ft run, 3% is 3 feet.
- Use a marker to mark the line 3 feet from the end post.
- Pull the line tight until your mark reaches the end post.
Proper tensioning is crucial — it keeps the fence visually clean, helps prevent sagging, and reduces the risk of injuries and breaks.
Can I install Cameo™ fencing on a hill?
Yes — Cameo™ can absolutely be installed on hills.
We install on sloped terrain all the time. The flexibility of the monofilament line allows it to follow the contour of the land without compromising function or appearance. Maintain your 12-foot post spacing and keep the lines tight for optimal results.
Can I use Cameo™ for a round pen?
No, Cameo™ is not recommended for round pens.
The type of close-contact training typically done in a round pen requires a solid, hard barrier to provide clear boundaries and improve safety for both the horse and handler. Cameo™ is designed for perimeter and cross fencing where distance from the line is maintained.
Can I use Cameo™ to make a riding arena?
Yes! Cameo™ riding arenas are very popular.
For riding arenas, we recommend a slightly adjusted installation process to create a safer, more enclosed space:
- Use 8 lines of non-electric Cameo™ for optimal visibility and containment
- Use 5" posts for all line, corner, and gate posts
- Corner and gate posts should be concreted; line posts do not require concrete
- Posts should be set 8 feet on center
- Set posts so they are 54 inches out of the ground
- Run the top line at 52 inches, and space each line 6 inches apart from top to bottom
Can I use Cameo™ to fence in my dogs, goats, sheep, or other small animals?
No — Cameo™ was specifically designed with the safety and needs of horses in mind.
Its line spacing and flexibility are not suitable for containing smaller animals like dogs, goats, or sheep, which can slip through or under the fence. For those animals, we recommend fencing systems designed specifically for their size and behavior.
Will Cameo™ work in a very hot climate, like the deserts in Arizona?
The Cameo™ polymers are treated with powerful UV blocking agents. They are actually infused into the filament material prior to extrusion, so it is not a coating. We like that - it was part of the development of the product - and it works, with Cameo™ pastures in 20+ years in all sorts of conditions.
Can you see Cameo in the snow?
YES! You can see it clearly and it holds up for as many years in the cold as it does in the heat! We have customers who have had Cameo in their pastures for 30 years.

I've had my Cameo™ Fencing for 19 years now and am just now replacing parts of it!!! It's a Fantastic product. Customer Service is Excellent. Also, as far as safety for horses.......I have a Belgian Draft horse that weighs 2000 lbs. One day I was taking down a tent in my arena and didn't notice that he was in the same area. It scared him so much that he decided to jump out of the arena and his back legs got stuck on the top strand and it stretched for quite a way and then snapped!!! When I retrieved him and checked him out I noticed that he was absolutely fine (except for a little nervous) and there was just a tiny bit of hair missing from his back legs. Never even touched the skin. Remarkable Product. Highly Recommend

"I just ordered some Cameo™ Fencing. I'm just now replacing fence that I put up 14 - 15 years ago. Wonderful stuff!"
-Gary
I am a single female, the owner, rider, caretaker for 20 head of well-loved horses who range in age from infant to 24 years old, and in physical condition from "uber athlete" to pasture ornament. In 1997 I bought 75 acres of raw land, and began building barns and fencing on the property.
I have used Cameo™ fencing for every paddock and pasture put in since that time.
As a neophyte "country girl", I found Cameo™ to be easy to install by myself, and as a practicing veterinarian, I have yet to treat a single case of injury caused by a horse/fence encounter. (I wish I could say the same about the damage my horses inflict on each other...).
I use a six-strand set-up, and have lines two and five "hot". The fence deforms enough to allow a safe learning curve as the youngsters are educated about electricity, and if a wreck occurs and an individual breaks through the lines (as a freaked two-year-old did on her first encounter with a white horse. Boogers!) the most damage I see is a smear of white on a chest or leg.
I can repair breaks in five minutes without any help, and those repairs are nearly invisible, leaving an attractive, functional and astoundingly safe environment for myself and my horses.
My most recent project has been to build a barn and 10 acre paddock for an Australian Stock Horse stallion. I put in another six strand fence, set slightly higher (top line at 52" compared to my other fences at 46") and with electrical cabling in the first, third and fifth lines on the pole. My new guy got shocked twice, and hasn't tested the fence again, despite the appeal of other horses on the perimeter of his pen.
I love this product, and have recommended it to my clinic clients and my friends.
My trainer has replaced all her barbed wire with it, and can vouch for it's safety as well. After a family accident, her two stallions were inadvertently allowed to encounter each other across a fence, and despite the vocal challenges and striking that ensued, they ended the battle with a single bite wound to the neck, and not a mark on any other portion of either animal. With one of the stallions valued at more than $75,000, she thinks the decision to replace her wire with Cameo™ was one of the best choices of her life.
Thanks again for a wonderful product.

I have three horses and have had Cameo™ Fencing in my pasture for the last three years. I couldn't have asked for a better product for my horses and my pasture. I truly love Cameo™ Fencing. It requires very low maintenance and it is very safe for my horses. I have neighbors & people that are just driving by in their cars and have seen my fence and want to know where I purchased it from so that they can check into getting this fencing for their horses..

This fencing system is superior to any other on the market. It is perfect for the miniatures because it keeps them in and predators out! It is beautiful and cosmetically complimenting to the landscape of any farm. It is durable, cost effective and easy to install. I have had horses for over 30 years, had all types of fence and "CAMEO™" fencing is by far the best.n

I purchased cameo fencing in the mid 90's. I have been very happy with the product. I still have most of the cameo still in place even with the harsh temperature changes in Michigan. I am going to be buying more soon, Great product. It kept our horses in for years and it's simple to replace.
-Joel Mires
I bought my first fence from you in mid 1990's Hot sun in south Texas has taken some toll. Need to replace some of it. I've had garden tractors try to go through it, horses stretch it out--without injury and many other happenings. Can't say enough good about it. I have 4 strands, 3rd one is electrified and that has been Godsend.

Thank you for the extra pack of Gripples. We are such loyal customers because you are such loyal suppliers and have wonderful customer service orientation. Guess that is why we have been able to find you regardless of where you move. It is pleasure to do business with you.
Thank you.
Very easy reinstall. Your product makes my life easier.
-Thanks again, Dan - Dan has been a customer since 1998. Planning ahead for retirement he has reinstalled Cameo™.
I simply had to tell you that I am thrilled with the Cameo™ fence I have purchased for our farm. I have been showing and telling all our friends and neighbors about the fence and all who have come to look at it have fallen in love with it, even those without horses!
My husbands work schedule does not allow him much time to help me with projects like working on fence, so I fide that one of the greatest features of Cameo fence is how easy it is for one person to install with no extra help on hand. I can attest that anyone with any skill lever can put up this fence with no help.
I love the visibility and safety of the fence and it has been tested by our newborn and your foals with on injuries incurred. I also like that this fence is safe for wildlife such as the deer, who simply step through the strands without breaking them.
I can see the value of this fence in that it will be more durable and safe than traditional wire fences, and that it will save me time and money over the years with far less maintenance needed.
